FAQ About Fasting

Is fasting Biblical? Yes. There is no Biblical command to fast, but Jesus assumed that his disciples would fast. He taught, “When you fast do not look somber as the hypocrites do.” Jesus fasted for forty days before beginning his public ministry. There are examples of fasting throughout the Bible, including by the early church.

What is the purpose of fasting? The primary purpose of fasting is to worship God by expressing that we desire Him above all else. People have experienced many blessings as a result of fasting, including greater intimacy with God, inner healing, guidance and spiritual breakthrough. Spend extra time praying during your fast. Ask God what He wants to happen next in your life.

How will fasting impact my health? God’s people have been fasting for thousands of years. Some people claim that there are numerous health benefits. Although those claims may be exaggerated, it is safe to say that for most people fasting is not harmful.

Can anyone fast? No, and yes. Not everyone can fast from food. If you are a pregnant or nursing mother you should not fast from food. If you have any serious medical condition or if you are taking any medication, then you should consult your medical doctor prior to fasting. Everyone can fast from something. Fasting is not limited to food and drink, but to anything that is legitimate in itself that you give up for God. For example, some people have fasted from television.

How do I get started fasting from food? If you are new to fasting, begin with a partial fast of two meals while drinking fruit juice and water. Many people start by fasting lunch to lunch. Later you can progress to a normal twenty-four hour fast, using only plenty of water. Break your fast with a light meal of fruits and vegetables.

Are there different types of fasting in the Bible? Yes. When the Bible talks about fasting, it is normally talking about abstaining from all food, but not water. There is, however, the Biblical example of Daniel, who fasted from meat, delicacies, and wine.

Can I exercise while fasting from food? Try to avoid intense physical activity during a fast from food. Limit yourself to stretching exercises and light walking.

Will I lose a lot of weight while fasting from food? Weight loss varies. Initially, you may lose three to four pounds per day, much of it water. If the fast continues the average loss will be one pound per day.

Must fasting be done secretly? No. Jesus taught that fasting should not be done for the praise of men and that the Father sees and rewards what is done in secret. The early church fasted corporately (as our church is now doing), and these fasts were not done in secret. You should not draw undue attention to the fact that you are fasting, but there is no need to take extraordinary measures to be secretive.
